Telephone Usage
JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Karen: Yes 8am-10 pm. There were only 10 phones per cell block though so if they were all busy you would have to stand there and wait your turn to use the phone.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people?
Karen: Collect call charges to the receiving party.
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Karen: No. The inmates had the choice to either dial out collect, or use a prepaid calling card available by purchasing from the commissary. I did have a calling card that I purchased though so the party I called wouldn’t be charged collect calls.
JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Karen: Absolutely. All calls were recorded.
