Medications in Jail

JM: Did you always have access to necessary medications?
Karen: No. I waited 3 weeks to get my prescription filled, and if I was on labor detail when meds arrived in the cell block I would not get my medication. There were a few times that I told the deputy after coming back from work detail that I wasn’t there to get my medication and I was told that I would have to wait until the next med cart came into the cell block. I didn’t think that was fair.

JM: How did you get your medications?
Karen: The med cart would come into the cell and the inmates would stand in line, then you had to take the pill in front of the deputy and open your mouth to show the pill was swallowed.

JM: What types of punishments were incurred for abuse of drugs?
Karen: Solitary confinement, being kicked off labor detail and sent back to Dorm 42.
