Meals in Jail

JM: How many meals did you get per day?
Karen: We were served three meals a day, breakfast was at 5:30 a.m. so if you didn’t wake up or your cell mate didn’t wake you, you didn’t eat.

JM: How would you rank the food?
Karen: The food was very gross, and consisted of all soybean based meats, there was no real meat served except for the Deputy lunches that I ate. I only ate lunch in jail after I got into the labor detail program.

JM: Did you have any favorite/least favorite meals?
Karen: Yes deputy lunches were my favorite. My least favorite was dinner, usually the same thing every week, I did serve the meals to the other inmates, that was part of my labor detail program.

JM: Were there any other snacks offered outside of meals?
Karen: No snacks.

JM: Was there a commissary? What was it like?
Karen: Yes, commissary was once a week. You could buy coffee and other snacks. It was the highlight of all inmates week. You would have to order one week in advance and have the money on your books to do so. Then whatever you ordered would be delivered to you the following week. Someone from the outside would have to put money on your books and then you would get a receipt showing who paid/and how much.
