Final Thoughts
JM: Is there anything else you would want a friend or family member to know if they have a loved one going to jail?
Karen: Just to stay positive and get into any labor program you can to pass the time. Also, even if you can’t afford a private attorney, you need to get one. You CAN’T afford not to have an attorney. If I would have hired an attorney my chances of getting on work release were very good and I would not have lost my very good paying job at Hewlett Packard. The public defenders have a very busy schedule and don’t have time to focus on your case as a privately hired attorney would.
JM: Is there anything else you would recommend to a future inmate?
Karen: Learn from your experience in jail. You will have plenty of time to think about your life and how things can be better and different for you when you get out. Don’t make any more mistakes that will get you into more trouble in the future. Follow all your probation officer’s rules.
